CAMPING

Whether you plan to camp in a tent, vehicle, or overhead, there are some important things to note before heading over to Core Banks on a camping trip.  We will get you there, but the rest is up to you!

BEFORE YOU PACK...

Camping is permitted on all islands within Cape Lookout National Seashore, however, there are no designated campsites.  Tent campers may set up among, but not on, the dunes just behind the ocean beach as well as on the sound-side of the island.  All camping within the park is primitive beach camping: there are no designated campgrounds.

Visitors are welcome to camp with their vehicles, but vehicles, including any style trailer or pop-up camper, or vehicles with a rooftop tent or truck bed camper, must be kept on the oceanside beach seaward of the primary dunes, not between or on top of dunes. In addition, no vehicle is allowed to camp on the trail behind the dunes known as the "back road" unless there is a designated signed spot.

A camping permit is required for camping within the seashore. These permits are free of charge and are available at each of the park’s visitor centers, as well as at self-serve permit stations on each of the Islands. You may camp for up to 14 consecutive days.
